Our favorite analogy for site design relates it to the building of a house (you may have seen this before if this isn't the first page you've read). The blue prints and floor plan of a house are like the site architecture and linkages of a web site, meant to create a "living space" that has a place for everything you need and room to grow. The front end design of the site is like the overall look of a house externally and internally giving the house "curb appeal". Design also includes the actual coding of the pages, like laying the foundation and building a frame and roof on top of it. What might be an easier question to answer would be "What does design not include?". If a house was built only as far as the design goes, it would lack plumbing, electricity, security, and other conveniences that make it more than just a shelter. The biggest problem with the world wide web today is that it contains too much information and is too poorly organized. The chances of a person stumbling on to a website that they want without help is insignificant.
