What is Web Development?

Fool Who? Where am I?

Web development is the process of applying a programming language to create interactive features on a site allowing the site to become dynamic, save the sites owner time and providing a richer experience for the sites visitors. An analogy we often use when describing the process of creating a website is that the process is similar to building a house (If this isn't the first page you've read we're sure you've seen this before). The development process is like putting in the plumbing, wiring, alarm systems, and under ground sprinkler that make the house more than just a shell. There are many sites that exist on the web that don't involve any developed features but these sites are really little more than expensive online business cards or brochures, they are good at giving information but not at collecting or connecting information.

Systems Analysis

Standard Web Development Project Gantt Chart

A developed website is a piece of software purchased by a business or individual to improve their business processes. Because of this, FoolAlooF has always approached the site development process the same way that software is traditionally developed. Using a time refined and improved development process means that we will get the job done in as short a time as possible (How many web shops even know what a critical path is?) and on budget. Click on the image to view a standard web development gantt chart that we follow for most development projects. The time allocated to task is, of course, very dependent on the project but it should give you some insight into our process.

Custom Programming

Custom programming is what is required to be able to develop dynamic web content. At FoolAlooF we have in house expertise in most, if not all, of todays most common development languages including:

  • XHTML and CSS
  • JavaScript
  • Ruby on Rails
  • Java/JSP
  • PHP
  • ColdFusion

Having the widest array of languages at our disposal allows use to develop nearly any feature for nearly any platform.

Database Design and Integration

Few non-trivial websites today operate without a database back end, feeding always up-to-date information to the site and collecting information about those visiting the site. FoolAlooF has years of experience designing and implementing databases to be used with websites turning them from simple marketing tools to a fully integrated part of your business with online sales / e-commerce, inventory tracking, content management, and collection of rich marketing data.
